Are You Superstitious Watch Video
67Are you superstitious?
Have you ever crossed a black cat, broken a mirror, walked under a ladder or stepped on a crack? Did any of this ever bring you bad luck? I have to say that I have done these things and much more, and have made it through without even a scratch. I have to give God all of the credit for the things in my life, because it is a wonder that I have lived for over 20 years, because of some of the crazy things I have done, and I just turned 49 recently.
This hub is not meant to offend anyone, but to bring forth an awareness of different beliefs and religions. A lot of people are very superstitious and believe in some things that I consider to be hogwash, but that is only my opinion. Just like some people may believe the same thing about Christianity ,which is perfectly fine with me.
I can understand how some non-Christian people may not want to talk about Christianity, God, Jesus, or the Bible. I am the very same way about the Muslim religion, the Buddhist religion, Hindu or any other religion or faith. However, I am somewhat curious and interested in knowing why other people believe the things they do.
I would not want someone to try to convince me to become a Muslim, or any other religion, because changing my faith just isn't going to happen. We all believe what we do, just because, whatever those reasons happen to be. It is understandable that sometimes changing our belief system can be very difficult if not impossible.
I don't really know anything about Voodoo, Wicca, or Satan worship, and really don't want to know. No offense to anyone who believes in that, but I feel those beliefs are a little bit too much for me to handle or understand. I know there are some people who claim to be Christians, who also at the same time, believe in astrology, the horoscope, and the zodiac. I myself at one time years ago thought there may be something to it, until one day I found a scripture in the Bible that says we should not turn that way.
Deuteronomy 18:10-13
There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.
Anyway, that's just part of what the Bible says about that. My birthday is in July and I am a Cancer, and I have to say that I find it very odd that the description of a Cancer person, seems to fit me almost perfectly. How weird is that? I have heard that some Spanish people believe in something called the Evil Eye. I'm not sure exactly what that is, but brother if I ever see it common sense tells me to run like Hell !
When I was younger I was told that if you stepped on a crack, you will break your ma ma's back. Every day when I got home from school I had to check on my mom to see how she was. Just as I figured, no problems. She used to think it was very nice that I was so concerned about her health, and I genuinely was, but who wants to be the blame for breaking your ma ma's back? We all have our own personal beliefs and I respect yours.
Oh well, my advice would be. If you're going to step on a crack, make sure it's not big enough to fall into. If you're going to walk under a ladder, make sure you don't knock it down or knock anyone off of it. If you're going to cross a black cat, don't get close enough that it could scratch you. Common sense wins out every time.

I would never challenge any of these sayings. I just leave it well alone.
You really don't find many who are bold enough to speak as you did in your Hub. But it is all so true. Great Hub. I did enjoy reading it. Thanks for sharing and for your boldness!!
I lived just about 30 miles from you until 3 months ago. The Gulf coast was my home for many years. Nice to see a fellow Texan on here.
Good hub. Some superstitions are just plain silly. I have no idea where they stemmed from.
Liked your Hub, thank you for sharing. :0)
I always say "step on a crack- get outta that side of town". LOL
I like your advice on these one liners. I can see where stepping on a crack large enough to fall into work break by back.
I always enjoy this, Stevie's, version of Superstition! Great hub. I'm too paranoid about government to be superstitious.
zzron,
I didn't know people from the other side of the globe believed in superstitions like the one on black cat.I must confess though I keep myself away from all this but when a black cat crosses my road I stop for some time before moving forward.Just trying to play safe.My dad often scolds me for this.
This is not the only one...there are lots.I wish to get out of all this. The last line, "Common sense wins out every time" caught me in my tracks. Thanks because I'll keep coming back to this hub to gain some sense. :)
Z,
Not walking under is a good idea because if something falls from the ladder with gravity and all it could happen- It would hit you. I read somewhere that all-black cats had "evil souls" trapped in them and if you crossed them-they could jump into you- but some of the nicestcats I have knownwere sweet all black cats. As for throwing salt I think that had something to do withdemons and salt lines..something like that. friday the 13th came from some massacre of a religeous sect somewhere at soometime.
taking the spoon out of the chocolate milk was because of the whole poke your eye out thing.
same thing with running with scissors juggling knives etc
I think there is a bit of truth and common sense to many of the supersticious behaviors- BB guns - you'll shoot your eye out don't spit in the wind= thats obvious careful when you pick the soap up in a prison shower- its obvious
great hub though...
