A Thumbs Up Review

If you are in the market for a GPS. I highly recommend looking into the Garmin Nuvi 1300. I have personally purchased one of my own about three weeks ago. I overpaid for mine because I got it from a truck stop. In case you didn't know everything in truck stops sale for double and triple the price opposed to regular discount or department stores. My GPS was $179.00 retail, with tax total cost was about $190.00.

This particular model sells for as low as just a little more than $100.00 at Wal-Mart or just about any electronic store that sells GPS or online at www.garmin.com I drive an 18 wheeler all over the country and have done this for the past 13 years. Last month when I was out on the road I decided to look around and get one because I could see the benefits of having one and didn't want to wait till I got home.

There are several GPS brands on the market when I saw the Garmin Nuvi 1300 it seemed to have all the features I was looking for. At the time I knew nothing about GPS or how it worked but it did come with a simple easy to use quick start booklet. One thing I did not know at the time I got it is that this model is not programmed for trucks with truck routes, truck restrictions, rest areas or truck stops like some of the more expensive models that are designed for trucks. This particular model is basically for your standard everyday personal vehicle which I'm sure most of you drive on a daily basis.

Even though this model is not designed for trucks. It has been a huge blessing to have. I think it is the ideal GPS for anyone. It is very easy to use and can tell you where the closest stores, shopping malls, Wal-Mart, drug stores, motels and lodging, taxi cab services, food and restaurants, gas stations, and hospitals are, and it also gives their phone numbers. It has a touch activated screen you can touch with your finger or a pen to type in destination addresses in all cities and states. This one also verbally talks and tells you when and where to turn and highlights the route in front of you to follow in purple and a blue highlighted lines showing the route you have just traveled. This unit also has a setting for pedestrian or if you're riding a bicycle.

If all of this sounds good there is still more. It will also tell you the local time, the total miles from where your starting point is to your destination and how many miles you have driven from your starting point, plus your speed, the elevation of your location and the time it will take to reach your destination. I would encourage you to check around at the different stores that sell GPS and compare the prices and what each one will and will not do to more suit your needs. By the way, I'm not making any money on this or trying to sell you anything, just passing on some free advice and my opinion of this wonderful technology. One thing I can tell you for sure is that I don't know how I managed without it in the past !

Your welcome Hello, Garmin has many different models and prices. This thing is so wonderful. It is a very handy thing to have even if you don't travel. It is so nice to have to look up local addresses and it also gives their phone numbers. Its like having your own electronic pocket phone book.

Hi, zzron. Happy you are enjoying your GPS. Just don't leave it in your car where it might be visible to others. Thieves today love to smash car windows (it's easily done with a sparkplug) just to get the GPS inside.

Thanks drbj, yes I am well aware of the dangers of leaving important things expose in your vehicle. Another reason why I don't leave mind on the dash when I'm not using it is to keep it away from the heat.

zzron, We have a Garmin and love it but plan to get a new one when they go on sale at Christmas. We haven't updated the maps as that is a little expensive and we figured we would wait and just get a new one as they are a nice thin size plus they have more perks. This one you featured looks great to me. Thanks.

I voted that I have a GPS and I do but I have a garmin 305. This can be hooked up to a computer and the PC program will tell me elevation accumulation, speed on the course, pictures a detailed elevation chart, shows your route on a map and other neat stuff. There is another for cyclists that selld for a couple hundred or so and can be programmed for a specific course. Or once you've ridden a course you can "save" it and put that course into the GPS and the GPS will tell you every turn. Great hub!

Thanks Micky Dee, the 1300 can also be hooked up to the computer and do the same thing. I bought the cord for that but haven't yet worked with it on the computer.

I bought Garmin nüvi® 1450 4 months ago. It has extra-wide, 5-inch touch-screen display, lane assist with junction view, preloaded street maps for North America. It speaks street names, Where am I?, photo navigation, ecoRoute™, pedestrian navigation options, optional FM lifetime traffic. I love it. My family and I are going to Canada next month without this gps. Thanks zzron for your informative hub. I like the video.

I recently acquired a nuvi 1300 from a car dealer who was required to give me a rear-view mirror mounted compass but couldn't because of its use as a back-up camera screen. He ordered the GPS instead. I just completed a 2500 mile trip and found it very useful except that it put me in the wrong lanes at ez-pass bridges, tolls, etc. When Ez-pass sends me notices and fines, I'm gonna have to blame it on my GPS.

What is the connection between Garmin GPS's and cancer? If anyone has explored this issue, please respond to: stancando@gmail.com

zzron Hub Author 5 months ago

Thanks stancando, I don't know the answer to the cancer question but it won't tell you to take or not to take the EZ Pass lane because it doesn't know if you have an account or not, but it will tell you what exit to take. Thanks for the comment.
